Arter

Arter, contemporary arts institution of the Vehbi Koç Foundation (VKV). Arter was opened in May 2010 on Istanbul's Istiklal Street in the historical building known as Meymaret Han, with the aim of providing a sustainable infrastructure for producing and exhibiting contemporary art.

Arter opened with an exhibition called “Starter”, which showcased 160 works from the VKV Contemporary Art Collection created by 87 artists from Turkey and across the globe. Between 2010 and 2018, Arter hosted solo exhibitions, collaborative events with other international institutions, and group exhibitions focusing on new productions. As part of the exhibitions of this period, Arter presented 35 solo and group exhibitions with accompanying publications, talks, performances and workshops; and provided support for the production of 183 artworks in the framework of these exhibitions.

Arter also served as a preparatory research and learning environment for the contemporary art museum, which is VKV's single major project in the field of contemporary art. Due to open in September 2019, Arter's new building is designed by London-based Grimshaw Architects, whose design concept was selected through a paid competition. Covering a space of 18,000 square meters, the museum is envisaged as both a cultural and educational hub. At its new home, Arter will present exhibitions from but not limited to the VKV Contemporary Art Collection, as well as performances and events across disciplines, expanding the range of its programmes. As well as exhibition spaces, the museum will include performance spaces, meeting and activity rooms, a library, conservation lab, bookstore focused on art publications, and refreshment areas.

Melih Fereli is the founding director and Emre Baykal leads the museum’s team of curators. As of the end of 2018, the museum’s collection, started through the initiative of Ömer M. Koç in 2007, contains more than 1,300 works of more than 350 artists from Turkey and its neighboring countries, as well as Europe and North America. It combines the work of leading artists that started out in the 1960s with that of later generations.
