Ankara University Medal of Philanthropy

Ankara University Medal of Philanthropy, award granted by Ankara University (AU) Rectorate to the Koç family in 2015 for their contribution to society, education and the university. The Ankara University Vehbi Koç Student Dormitory, built in 1949–50, was the first major social contribution made by Vehbi Koç, who donated the building to the university in 1951. The Vehbi Koç Eye Bank affiliated to Ankara University School of Medicine was built in 1963, also by Vehbi Koç. Forty years after its inauguration, it was thoroughly renovated and expanded by the Vehbi Koç Foundation (VKV), opening in 2007 with the new name, Ankara University School of Medicine Vehbi Koç Eye Hospital. The financial support of VKV also led to the establishment of Turkey’s first underwater archaeology research and application center, the Ankara University Mustafa V. Koç Research Center for Maritime Archaeology, which opened in June 2015 in the Urla district of Izmir. The VKV continues to provide support for numerous departments of AU.
