Baykal, Emre

Baykal, Emre (b. May 12, 1965, Istanbul) curator. He has worked as director of exhibitions and curator at Arter since 2008 and currently manages the curatorial team of the contemporary art museum scheduled to open in September 2019.

He graduated from Işık High School in Istanbul in 1983 and completed an English Language and Literature degree at Boğaziçi University in 1991. Baykal served as editor at Anons Journal of Plastic Arts (1992-94),assistant director (1994-2000) and director (2000-05) at the Istanbul Biennial, and director of exhibitions at santralistanbul (2005-07). He has also curated various exhibitions at different institutions home and abroad. In 2008, he became director of exhibitions and curator at Arter. In 2013, he curated the Pavilion of Turkey at the Venice Biennale 55th International Art Exhibition. He has also contributed to numerous publications and exhibition catalogs. Among the exhibitions Baykal curated at Arter are solo exhibitions of Deniz Gül (2011), Kutluğ Ataman (2011), Mona Hatoum (2012), Volkan Aslan (2013), Füsun Onur (2014) and Ali Kazma (2015).
